Babylon Outreach Program

Uso o Babylon há algum tempo, instalado no meu computador. O software funciona como um dicionário, com a vantagem que, trabalhando em diversas plataformas com texto editável, é só apertar control e clicar com o botão direito do mouse em cima da palavra e o programa abre sugerindo diversas opções de tradução. É claro que não serve para textos muito técnicos e o tradutor sempre tem de checar se a tradução sugerida combina com o sentido do texto. Mas isso são considerações básicas de quem consulta qualquer dicionário bilíngue. A praticidade é a grande vantagem do Babylon. Isso sem falar na variedade de fontes: muitos dicionários já vêm instalados e há a opção de comprar outros. Um dicionário que costuma ter boas traduções é o do Ivo Korytowski. O Babylon 9 está disponível para download aqui. Ainda estou usando o 8, mas logo passarei para o 9 e conto as novidades.

Longos meses de ausência neste blog - desculpem-me. O fato é que o tempo ficou realmente curto para atualizações. Retomo hoje com mais uma dica para quem trabalha, como eu, com tradução jurídica. É o site TransLegal. Este site, dedicado ao inglês jurídico, oferece três tipos de assinatura. A assinatura gratuita já é bastante interessante, pois dá acesso à "Lesson of the Week", em que um profissional analisa alguns termos que costumam ser confusos, como esta aula que postei abaixo sobre terminologia para contratos. Existe uma assinatura mensal paga, cerca de 12 reais por mês, que dá acesso a diversos cursos e outros materias, incluindo uma consulta mensal a um advogado sobre termos. Acredito que essas duas opções sejam as ideais para nós tradutores.

Não é novidade, mas é sempre bom lembrar.

O site informativo jurídico, político e econômico Migalhas possui uma seção dedicada à linguagem jurídica em inglês. É o Migalaw English, escrito pela competente Luciana Carvalho Fonseca. São muitas dicas publicadas regularmente e há uma lista com alguns posts mais antigos para consulta.

Atualmente, o tema é Verbos frasais na linguagem jurídica, que já está na 5º parte. Vale a pena acompanhar. Volta e meia, pesquisando no Google, acabo caindo numa página do Migalaw.

Meus comentários (muito atrasados) sobre a Flip

O tempo anda corridíssimo, por isso o abandono deste blog. Por isso também demorei tanto para postar meus comentários sobre a Flip, a Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty. De qualquer forma, mesmo atrasados, aí vão:

- Primeira coisa: houve um debate com tradutores! Bem, não foi com tradutores que traduzem para português os livros responsáveis pela maior fatia do mercado editorial brasileiro, mas já é alguma coisa. Falaram Alison Entrekin, que traduziu para o inglês Cidade de Deus, Budapeste e O filho eterno, e Berthold Zilly, que traduziu Os Sertões para o alemão (ai, que tarefa!). Muito interessantes os dois, com histórias gostosas de se ouvir. Quem sabe na próxima Flip ganhamos mais debates sobre tradução, quem sabe com um dos autores internacionais convidados e seu tradutor brasileiro?

- A casa dos Clássicos Penguin montada pela Companhia das Letras estava muito bacana e simpática. Lá vi Salman Rushdie e Fernando Henrique falando sobre O Príncipe, de Maquiavel, um dos quatro primeiros clássicos da nova parceria. Tradução nova, por sinal, do italiano, de Maurício Santana Dias. Está aqui na cabeceira, para ler em breve.

- Rushdie, aliás, é figura muito interessante. Foi ótimo ouvi-lo falar do seu novo livro, Luka e o fogo da vida, que foi lançado em Paraty, em português, em primeira mão. É, o lançamento mundial foi em português e na Flip. Vocês acham que o debatedor enfatizou isso? Se acha, você não conhece os debatedores da Flip...

- Mas houve alguns bons debatedores. Grande exemplo foi Ángel Gurría-Quintana. Ángel interagiu com seus dois entrevistados, William Kennedy e Colum McCann, escutava o que eles diziam para depois poder fazer a pergunta seguinte com algum senso de continuidade, passava de um para o outro com sensibilidade, sabia de coisas interessantes da vida e obra dos dois para poder fazê-las vir à tona e não disputava com eles o papel principal da entrevista. Incrível, mas isso é raridade na Flip!

- Essa mesa, aliás, foi uma das melhores para mim. Achei fascinante as histórias dos dois. E o irlandês McCann ganhou o troféu simpatia.

- Muito simpática também a casinha do Clube de Autores. Pessoal bacana, bom conhecer as caras por trás do site.

- Paraty, claro, continua uma delícia de cidadezinha.

- E, como sempre, o “ar” da Flip é ótimo, com coisas interessantes acontecendo o tempo todo, pessoas bem humoradas, alto astral.

Precisa melhorar...
- A Flip não consegue organizar a venda de ingressos e isso é tremendamente frustrante. O site para venda antecipada só aceitava a compra de 3 mesas de cada vez! O preço já salgadinho de 40,00 por mesa era acrescido de 20%, além da taxa final. Os poucos ingressos à venda (poucos, sim, a maioria é distribuída para convidados) acabaram em minutos. Um abuso. No local, as coisas não foram melhores e a demora das atendentes para conseguirem fechar uma venda lembrava um Brasil de tempos muito passados...

- O show de abertura, que achei que era do Edu Lobo, foi de uma tal de Renata Rosa. Edu Lobo deu só uma canjinha. O que teve de gente saindo antes do Edu entrar. Eu fiquei, firme e forte, mas confesso que foi uma das maiores torturas musicais pelas quais já passei. E era pago, o show.

- Uma pergunta: será que convidar FH em tempos de eleição foi uma decisão, digamos, apropriada?

- Os debatedores. Isso precisa melhorar. Nem precisa explicar.

Teria muito, muito mais para escrever, mas o post já está de bom tamanho.

New (and not so new) books on translation and the translation industry

Yesterday Twitter and translation blogs informed us about an e-book on translation agencies that is available for download. So I thought it would be a good idea to list a few recent options of books for translators:

Translators' Agency is a free e-book (pdf) which is being distributed by the University of Tampere. It's "is a collection of articles focusing on the role of agency in the activity of translators and interpreters".

The recently launched Fidus Interpretes: a prática da tradução profissional by Fabio Said is a must buy for Portuguese speakers. It's an on demand book, and can be bought from Brazil, Portugal and the US. In Brazil it costs R$49,00 plus shipping.

The Entrepreneurial Linguist: The Business-School Approach to Freelance Translation by Judy A. Jenner and Dagmar V. Jenner is also available on demand from Lulu for U$25.00. Or you can buy the e-book and download it for U$17.00. The book includes "includes easy-to-understand lessons based on teachings of business school, with many case studies, examples, etc."

How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator by Corinne McKay can be bought from Amazon. It "will teach you how to find and keep well-paying translation clients, pursue translator certification, set your rates and payment terms, develop translation specializations, and organize your business for success".

I don't particularly like theoretical books on translation, but if you do, this one is quite recent: O trabalho da tradução, organised by Márcia Atália Pietroluongo. It has several papers by different scholars. Available in Brazil in Portuguese.

Enough reading for a few weeks.

Já falei várias vezes aqui sobre o blog Fidus Interpres, do tradutor Fabio Said. Quem não conhece, vá correndo visitar. Fabio acaba de atingir a marca de 500.000 visitantes. Agora, seus posts vão ser reunidos em um livro, "Fidus interpres: a prática da tradução profissional", a ser lançado ainda este mês, segundo o próprio autor. O livro já nasce um clássico para tradutores. Fabio trata em seu blog de todas as questões importantes para quem atua nesta área de maneira informada, atual, simples e direta.

Congresso da Abrates - continuação | Abrates Translation Congress - continued

Então,...

Custou um pouquinho mais do que eu queria para poder postar novamente sobre o congresso.

Primeiro, quero repetir que o congresso foi excelente, a organização está de parabéns e acho que todos os presentes aproveitaram muito, cada uma da sua forma.

Levando os peixinhos para passear...
Queria lembrar uma das coisas que o key note speaker João Roque Dias falou na abertura oficial. Metaforicamente, ele comparou os tradutores a peixinhos em um aquário e convocou a Abrates a levar seus peixinhos para passear. Que viria a ser isso? Buscar proativamente oportunidades de apresentar seus peixinhos - seus tradutores - a clientes em potencial. Há um congresso de medicina? Lá iria a Abrates buscar uma presença para mostrar que tem tradutores especializados em tradução médica. Claro, os congressos só para tradutores são ótimos. Mas entrar nos congressos dos "outros" para mostrar nossos serviços é uma ideia genial. Os recursos são poucos e o trabalho é muito, tenho certeza, mas é uma ideia a se pensar. E, com certeza, isso seria um ponto muito atraente para aqueles que estão em dúvida quanto a se associar à Abrates.

As pessoas
Um dos pontos altos, imagino que para todos, foi o encontro com colegas tradutores de todas as partes do Brasil (e de fora do país também). Conhecer pessoas novas, conhecer ao vivo quem se conhecia virtualmente e reencontrar velhos conhecidos é sempre uma das coisa mais importantes dos encontros de classe. Para mim pessoalmente foi uma experiência excelente e divertida, além de proveitosa profissionalmente.

Escorregadelas mínimas
Mas sempre cabe um espaço para melhorar. É nesse intuito que vou falar sobre três pequenos detalhes que poderiam ter sido evitados e que podem servir de reflexão para o futuro.

- Moacyr Scliar - Era de se esperar que sua apresentação fosse concorrida, por isso o desapontamento quando ele anunciou que teria um compromisso (veja o post anterior sobre como sua ausência foi mais do que compensada). A organização também só ficou sabendo na hora, portanto não havia muito o que fazer, a não ser uma coisa, que não foi feita: alguém da Abrates ou da Detail poderia ter aberto o painel e se desculpado pelo que iria acontecer. Afinal, imprevistos acontecem, mas o congresso era um evento pago e uma atenção da organização reconhecendo a falha (mesmo não sendo deles diretamente) teria sido muito simpático.

- "Dress code" - É incrível, ninguém poderia imaginar, mas uma palestrante realmente extrapolou em sua reação ao calor de Porto Alegre. Apareceu usando top curtinho, calça jeans baixa, a barriga e uma enorme marca da calcinha do biquini à mostra. Chegou a ser cômico, tudo bem. Foi muito comentado. O que poderia ter sido feito para evitar isso? Alguém da organização do congresso poderia ter, na hora mesmo, falado com ela? Oferecido uma jaqueta? Sei lá. Era um congresso, não um passeio no parque! :-)

- Coffee break - Fiquei surpresa com a ausência de coffee break no sábado. Em geral, o coffee break não faz parte de todos os dias de um congresso, pelo menos em um dos intervalos, mas de preferência em dois, de manhã e de tarde?

Detalhes, como disse, pequenos.

Foi um prazer visitar a cidade e conhecer os "locais", que foram muito amáveis em todas as interações que pude ter. Para fechar, deixo vocês com algumas fotos que lá tirei.

O congresso realizado pela Abrates no fim de semana passado pode ser considerado um sucesso. Vou fazer uma breve (espero) descrição das minhas impressões. Claro que cada participante consegue apenas acompanhar uma parte das palestras e mesas, pois muitas são no mesmo horário. Mas digo que a maior parte do que pude assistir foi muito proveitosa. Houve alguns escorregões, aos quais chegarei depois, mas isso faz parte.

Na sexta-feira, fui à oficina de legendagem dada pela Sabrina Martinez, da Gemini Media, por pura curisosidade, já que dificilmente ingressarei nesse mercado (mal dou conta do que já faço!), apesar de ser uma área muitíssimo interessante. Sabrina deu uma excelente oficina prática, mostrando o passo a passo da legendagem com o programa (gratuito) Subtitle Workshop. Os participantes puderam sugerir traduções e ter uma noção de como proceder em termos de tempo da legenda na tela, traduções apropriadas, regras de legendagem e muitos outros detalhes.

No sábado, fui toda alegre para o Painel 3, onde estariam Moacyr Scliar, Sergio Flaksman e Luiz Angélico da Costa falando sobre tradução literária (coisa que me interessa por princípio e pela minha atividade de parecerista). E me decepcionei de cara quando Scliar informou que tinha um outro compromisso - creio que ele dedicou cerca de 10 minutos à mesa e foi embora. (Falarei mais sobre isso mais tarde, pois faltou presença da organização do congresso.) Felizmente, Sergio Flaksman mais do que compensou a gafe dando um relato de sua longa e bem-sucedida carreira de forma interessante, informada, simpática e muito útil.

Em seguida, assisiti a uma excelente palestra sobre tradução jurídica dada pela Tradutora Pública de São Paulo Tamara Barile. Tamara fez o impossível no pouco tempo de que dispunha, dando excelentes dicas para quem atua nessa área. E ainda recolheu os e-mails de todos os participantes para enviar as anotações valiosas da palestra.

Tive dificuldade em acompanhar os temas livres, pois houve muitas alterações de última hora que confundiram os participantes. Perdi alguns trabalhos que queria ter assistido. Mas destaco uma das apresentações, a de Fernando Campos Leza, que falou sobre o IntelliWebSearch (vou investigar mais e apresentar em outro post). Fernando foi simples, claro e objetivo e deixou todo mundo com água na boca e vontade de experimentar a ferramenta - gratuita - assim que possível.

O Painel de CAT que assisti a seguir foi bastante interessante, ainda que um pouco confuso; imagino que os iniciantes tenham saído com uma boa ideia sobre algumas delas, porém sem entender muito sobre outras. Destaco a apresentação de Daniel Estill sobre novidades no Wordfast.

Amanhã ou depois volto ao tema, pois ainda há muito que falar.

Translation Tips on Twitter | Dicas de tradução no Twitter

If you translate into English, you might want to follow @anglais (http://twitter.com/anglais), the twitter of Anglocom, an agency based in Quebec City. As you know, tweets are 140 characters long only, but @anglais manages to pack very useful short tips in their messages. Tweets like "The Translator’s Checklist: Would the sentence be more readable if I cut it in two? Do so if the meaning and connotation stay the same", or "The Translator’s Checklist: Can any nouns be changed to verbs to add movement to the text? Using verbs will make your text sound more Eng." are simple yet excellent, clear, and to the point. I like to read them and remind myself of some things or even learn new stuff! I've had a few "oh, yeah" moments following them. I think Anglocom should put all of this together in a book or e-book.

Bye bye 2009 and Happy New Year!

2009 was a year of great achievements for me, as I hope it was for you all too. Despite the crisis, among other things, I reviewed 59 books (a couple of which were fabulous); secured a contract with a global company, with rates in euros; said a couple of no's to translation agencies offering US$ 2 cents per word; passed a translation exam (more about it next year); and worked on a very exciting translation project for a respected journalist and magazine (I'm still not comfortable revealing more for security reasons; I'm obviously not as brave as the journalist in question.)

Now I'm taking much anticipated and needed time off. Though I'm not going away, I'll be staying away from computer, blog and Twitter!

To all my translation colleagues I would like offer a list of wishes that I hope will come true for everyone in 2010:

lots of exciting translation jobs
with reasonable deadlines
and excellent rates
clients who pay cash as soon as you deliver the job
a computer that never crashes
CAT tools that never fail
and
lots and lots of free time!

A nova ortografia - um ano depois | New Brazilian Portuguese spelling - one year later

Um ano depois, a reforma ortográfica da língua portuguesa ainda gera confusão e polêmica. Vou fazer aqui um pequeno apanhado sobre o assunto.

O acordo foi assinado pelos países da CPLP (Comunidade de Países de Língua Portuguesa): Brasil, Portugal, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola, Moçambique, Guiné-Bissau e Timor-Leste. No Brasil o acordo foi assinado pelo presidente Lula em 28 de setembro de 2009, com prazo para entrada em vigor até início de 2013. Apesar do prazo extenso, a mídia em peso adotou o acordo a partir de janeiro deste ano. Houve pouca controvérsia no Brasil - mais uma daquelas coisas que acontecem por aqui, em que o povo não foi consultado, mas aceita sem se importar muito. Alguns intelectuais se opuseram, mas são vozes solitárias.

Já em Portugal a coisa é diferente. O pessoal foi muito mais veemente - o povo em geral rejeitou o acordo. Para Portugal, as mudanças são mais extensas que para nós. Mas não é só isso. A ideia do acordo é "unificar" o idioma - a grafia do idioma. Como se unificando a ortografia o modo de usar a língua fosse, magicamente, ser unificado também. As diferenças entre português do Brasil e de Portugal, como todos sabem, são inúmeras, passando por vocabulário e gramática. Tanto que um tradutor brasileiro não pode traduzir para português de Portugal. (Ou melhor, não deveria; recentemente vi uma aberração dessas, um texto que o tradutor europeu jurava que estava traduzido para português do Brasil, mas estava num português inexistente, nem brasileiro, nem de Portugal.)

Aqui no Brasil, no entanto, resistir à mudança é impossível agora. Os tradutores profissionais também começaram a usar as novas regras a partir de janeiro deste ano. Com muita dificuldade, pois não havia ainda corretor ortográfico do Word nem dicionários atualizados.

Agora já contamos com muitos recursos. Em outubro, a Microsoft lançou o novo corretor ortográfico, mas somente para Word 2007 - quem usa versões anteriores não vai receber atualização! Numa esperta jogada, a empresa esperou tempo suficiente para que o prazo de atualização das versões mais antigas prescrevesse. A tradutora Val Ivonica explica como fazer a atualização no seu blog.

Mas existe outro corretor muito usado pelos tradutores, o Flip, recomendado pela Val e também pelo Fabio Said.

Muitos sites explicam as regras de forma bem clara, bem mais clara que o próprio acordo ou os primeiros livros lançados sobre o assunto. Vamos a alguns:

- Este da Abril é um apanhado de palavras comuns agrupadas pelas regras - visual, com antes e depois, permite relembrar e fixar cada regra mais facilmente.
- Este aqui é um minivocabulário de palavras mais usadas, para consulta rápida.
- O G1 fez um resumo das regras em uma página, útil e fácil de consultar.
- Aqui, um guia elaborado pela prefeitura do Rio, mais didático e bom para professores e estudantes.
- O Portal da Língua Portuguesa oferece este vocabulário das palavras que mudaram.
- O Ortografa! permite que você digite a palavra ou texto e receba as novas versões das palavras. Mas cuidado, nem todas as palavras ficam certas.

Para quem não quer errar mesmo, recomenda-se o Vocabulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa da Academia Brasileira de Letras. Se você usar o que está lá, ninguém poderá reclamar, é o vocabulário oficial do Brasil. Certo? Errado! Tempos depois de lançado foi (muito mal) divulgada uma errata! Ou seja, além de consultar o dicionário, consulte também a errata e, aí, terá certeza. O encarte com a errata está aqui.

Com tudo isso, não dá mais para escrever União Européia, viu? :-)

Translation Alchemists | Alquimistas da tradução

We've been "talking about" literary translation here so I thought this article, The Literary Translation Alchemists, by Anne-Marie Deraspe, published in Tabaret, the magazine of the University of Ottawa, would be interesting to complement our discussion. Some of the opinions in it don't relate exclusively to literary translation, for example: “Translators and interpreters have always played a determining role in the development of their societies and have been fundamental to the unfolding of intellectual history itself.” (Jean Delisle, professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Translation and Interpretation). If you're ever feeling frustrated because you're translating something "dry", think about this - you're contributing to the development of society, whatever it is you are translating! :-)

Another rather obvious statement is also a good reminder, especially for publishers: “You can’t be an educated reader without reading translations. Otherwise, you would have to speak an incalculable number of languages.” (Sheila Fischman, translator). Anyone can translate | Qualquer um pode traduzir

I hadn't felt offended as a translator before until last Wednesday. I was at a round table when the discussion turned to how Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol was launched. Apparently, nobody had acess to the book before it was published in English, so translators around the world had to rush so that publishers could launch it in their countries. Luckly, the person said, it was Dan Brown; any "elementary" translator, virtually anybody, can translate him - meaning he's not Shakespeare or another important writer, therefore translating him is very easy.

Well, well, well. This offense is an old one, but feels wrong every time. In Brazil, translated books represent the biggest slice of the book market. You just need to check any bestseller's list to notice that. Publishers, agents and bookshops alike would be lying if they said they don't "like" Dan Brown: his sales figures are more than welcome. It would also be logical to think that book translators should be regarded with respect, receive part of the credit for a book's success (if not royalties) and be well-paid. Nothing is far from the reality. Book translators in this country are the most badly paid in the industry of translation. But that's a long discussion.

The thing is, in a market dominated by translations, the translator is almost completely invisible. Moreover, they are undermined with comments like this, which was not just an impulse comment: it reveals a notion that permeates the public in general and the Brazilian book market in particular. The notion that anyone can translate. As any translator knows, this is not the case. Bad translators produce crap translations which no one can fix. Translators invest time and money learning a language, studying translation, buying equipment, buying dictionaries, buying computer tools, etc., etc.

Dan Brown may not be a classic, but that doesn't mean he's "easy" to translate. I'm not going to discuss in detail all the aspects because I don't want this to become a long rant! But to think that translating well is easy can only come from someone who has never translated anything. If you're not a translator and you think it's easy to keep the consistency of a 500-page book, then you should attempt it yourself. And when you're finished, post a comment here!

Revisar sua tradução - uma etapa óbvia? | Revising your own translation - an obvious step?

De vez em quando, sou lembrada de que uma etapa da tradução que considero essencial não é padrão para todos os tradutores: a última revisão do texto traduzido. Ou é em alguma conversa, quando algum colega lembra "Mas o conceito de revisão não é comum para muitos" ou "Muita gente entrega traduções sem revisar". Ou era quando eu trabalhava em Foreign Rights numa editora e ouvia dos revisores: "As traduções de Fulana são ótimas; ela revisa o próprio trabalho." Ou leio em algum blog um post sobre o assunto, recomendando que o tradutor se afaste do texto para revisá-lo depois.

Tudo isso me leva a crer que, não, essa revisão não é uma unanimidade entre os tradutores. Muito me espanto a cada vez. Meu processo de tradução é assim: primeiro traduzo, procurando termos técnicos, parando para checar esta e aquela palavra, traduzindo o melhor que posso, mas sem me deter demais na "beleza" do texto. Depois, reviso o trabalho ou trecho do dia e cotejo com o original. Aí eu durmo! E deixo o texto "dormir" também. No dia seguinte, pego no texto exclusivamente na língua de chegada, ou seja, na língua para qual traduzi o original, geralmente português. E o escrevo, efetivamente, em português!

Adoro essa etapa. Adoro mexer com as frases até ficar satisfeita com o resultado, trocar palavras por sinônimos melhores, tirar resquícios da língua de partida, mudar tudo que soa estranho, truncado. Com a cabeça fresca e sem olhar mais para o texto original, fica muito mais fácil escrever um texto fluido.

Agora, que tem gente que não faz nem uma revisão do que escreveu, isso tem! Acho uma temeridade. Depois, não há revisor que dê jeito no texto. Pode até melhorar, mas bom não fica. Há tradutores que trabalham em dupla, um traduz, o outro revisa, aí é outra história. Mas como entregar um texto sem revisão ao cliente final? É algo que não entendo.

There are lots of interesting things to read about the American Translators Association conference held at the end of October, so I'm listing a few here:

- The conference made the first page of the Los Angeles Times, with the piece 'Demand grows for niche translators'. "It's not just having the language skill. It's also having the expertise in the subject matter," said Dahlberg, whose story was striking enough that Nicholas Hartmann, president of the American Translators Assn., retold it during the group's 50th convention in New York last month." - The Jenner sisters, of Translation Times, posted their review of the conference. "Overall, it was fantastic: more than 150 sessions and more than 2,000 colleagues." Read the post here.

A little fun with words (and a little criticism of academic language...)

Imagine having to translate this:

"The move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relations in relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject to repetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into the thinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structural totalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility of structure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sites and strategies of the rearticulation of power."

In Brazilian Portuguese, sentences like these are normal in the academic sphere, and this is probably my worst translator's nightmare. The sentence is in Judith Butler's article 'Further Reflections on the Conversations of Our Time' and won the Worst Sentence of the Year award in the Philosophy and Literature Bad Writing Contest of 1998, according to the New Yorker.

But where is the fun of the title? In the same New Yorker article there's a link to a widget created by the University of Chicago, Make Your Own Academic Sentence. You just have to choose four phrases from the drop down lists and click the Write it! button. Then you'll get a "sentence" like this:

A partir de amanhã, 8 de novembro, e sempre aos domingos, o Sesc Pompéia, em São Paulo, promove o Encontros da Literatura - Tradutores, em que um tradutor falará sobre como é/foi traduzir um escritor de renome. Que ótimo! Não é numa feira de livros (vejam meu post anterior), mas é uma excelente iniciativa e uma maior visibilidade a essa categoria de tradutores (na qual, por sinal, não estou incluída!).

As feiras de livros e os tradutores | Book fairs and translators

Ontem, li no blog fidusinterpres o "diário" do Fabio Said do dia 15 de outubro, quando visitou a Feira de Frankfurt. É muito bacana, todos devem ler. Mas isso só me fez ficar mais atenta para a ausência quase que completa de eventos para tradutores nas feiras de livros brasileiras. Fabio cita diversas atividades interessantes, entre palestras, encontros e até um tradutor traduzindo em tempo real no meio do burburinho ensurdecedor da maior e mais importante feira de livros do mundo. Tem lá na feira um espaço para os tradutores, o Übersetzer-Zentrum (Centro dos Tradutores), com quarenta eventos programados e aberto para networking, contatos com autores e editoras. Outro mundo...

É sempre incrível observar como, no Brasil, o tradutor de livros (muitos outros também) é largamente ignorado. Ao abrir qualquer lista de livros mais vendidos no Brasil é fácil ver: a esmagadora maioria, algo como 8 ou 9 entre10, dos livros são traduções. No entanto, o tradutor, como profissional, segue invisível. Não ganha participação nos lucros, é muito mal pago e raramente é mencionado. Enfim, isso não é novidade para nenhum tradutor brasileiro, todos sabem muito bem da situação.

Só que, ao ler a coluna do Fabio ontem, fiquei com ainda mais vontade de que, por aqui, se fizessem também eventos para tradutores nas feiras de livros. A Flip, Festa Literária de Paraty, por exemplo, seria perfeita para uma mesa redonda com tradutores. Já sugeri isso antes via Twitter e planejo continuar sugerindo, fazendo que nem aquele ditado, "água mole..." Isso porque inúmeras mesas da Flip são com convidados/autores estrangeiros. As estrelas da feira sempre incluem autores estrangeiros. E como se vê na lista dos mais vendidos, o grande público lê as traduções dessas obras, e não seu original. Uma mesa redonda, uma entrevista com um tradutor, uma oficina, sei lá. Algo, mas ignorar totalmente a figura é incrível...

The October (and 50th!) issue of Translation Journal is online with lots of interesting articles. One of the them is written by Brazilian translator Danilo Nogueira, whose blog Tradutor Profissional is a reference for all translators in Brazil, and co-authored by Kelli Semolini. It also features the profile of translator Pimpi Coggins. I really like one of the things she says right before she starts writing about her life as a translator: "The secret to becoming a good and insightful translator is to think, think, and think some more. Then research, analyze, read, and never ever lose your sense of humor." I love this and couldn't agree more. There are times when I think I'm spending too long thinking about one specific sentence, for example. But the result always pays off. And sense of humour: well, that really is essential! This is a famous translation quote by renowned author Jorge Luis Borges, who was himself a translator. His views on translation are frequently discussed by translation students (Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote is a must read). You can have access to a discussion on this topic via Google Books. I'm talking about the book Invisible Work, Borges and Translation by Efraín Kristal, which you can read online here . The book overview gives a good idea of the discussion, so I've transcribed it below:

"It is well known that Jorge Luis Borges was a translator, but this has been considered a curious minor aspect of his literary achievement. Few have been aware of the number of texts he translated, the importance he attached to this activity, or the extent to which the translated works inform his own stories and poems.

Between the age of ten, when he translated Oscar Wilde, and the end of his life, when he prepared a Spanish version of the Prose Edda , Borges transformed the work of Poe, Kafka, Hesse, Kipling, Melville, Gide, Faulkner, Whitman, Woolf, Chesterton, and many others. In a multitude of essays, lectures, and interviews Borges analyzed the versions of others and developed an engaging view about translation. He held that a translation can improve an original, that contradictory renderings of the same work can be equally valid, and that an original can be unfaithful to a translation.

Borges's bold habits as translator and his views on translation had a decisive impact on his creative process. Translation is also a recurrent motif in Borges's stories. In "The Immortal," for example, a character who has lived for many centuries regains knowledge of poems he had authored, and almost forgotten, by way of modern translations. Many of Borges's fictions include actual or imagined translations, and some of his most important characters are translators. In "Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote," Borges's character is a respected Symbolist poet, but also a translator, and the narrator insists that Menard's masterpiece-his "invisible work"-adds unsuspected layers of meaning to Cervantes's Don Quixote. George Steiner cites this short story as "the most acute, most concentrated commentary anyone has offered on the business of translation."

O blog deste mês é meu favorito: fidus interpres, do tradutor Fabio Said. O blog está de cara completamente nova, num formato de revista. Ainda não explorei bem este novo formato, que requer muito mais atenção do que o antigo (que, aliás, ainda era bem novo). Mas os posts do Fabio são interessantíssimos, além de altamente informativos. A maioria é em português, mas alguns são em alemão e inglês. Não deixo de ler o fidus interpres diariamente para saber das novidades de tradução. Esta é a dica de julho. Para quem não conhece, será uma descoberta e tanto!

The blog of this month is my favourite: fidus interpres, published by translator Fabio Said. The blog has gained a totally new look and a magazine format. I haven't explored this new format well yet, which requires more concentration than the older format (which, by the way, was still quite new). But Fabio's posts are extremely interesting and highly informative. Most are in Portuguese, but some are in German and in English. I never miss reading fidus interpres daily to find out about translation news. This is July's tip. For those who don't know it, it will be an awesome find!

Paraty International Literary Festival - Can't go? Watch online

The Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP - Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty) will open today. It is the seventh edition of this successful event held every year in the historical village of Paraty, located on the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro. With authors coming from all over the world as well as renowned Brazilian writers, Flip is an exciting "party", a festival of ideas and words which attracts book lovers, authors, publishers, translators and artists. This year, according to the organizers, those who can't go to Paraty will be

Yesterday I attended an excellent talk by Danilo Nogueira at Aula Vox . It was a very interesting opportunity to listen to an established translator, from home, via the internet and for free! The event happens once a month and is called 'Reunião na Sala 7' (Portuguese only). Check the scheduled talks here: http://www.aulavox.com/eventos/eventos.htm.

Two subtitling courses are also scheduled at Aula Vox, with Carol Alfaro (English > Portuguese - http://www.aulavox.com/2009/08/carolinaa/introlegenda2408.htm) and Bianca Bold (Italian > Portuguese - http://www.aulavox.com/2009/08/biancab/legenita1808.htm). Both will last five hours and cost R$ 307,00 - for Portuguse speakers too.

Another good option (speakers of other languages included now!) are ProZ webinars http://www.proz.com/webinars/, some of which are free too. Last week I attended one on Wordfast Classic. It was very good for absolute beginners. Many of the webinars can be watched again, some for free others on a pay-per-view basis: http://www.proz.com/videos. There are several trainings here http://www.proz.com/online_trainings/, which are paid and get full quickly.

These are interesting options for those who have no time to attend a face to face course now to keep updated and in contact with what's new.

Wordnik - more than just a dictionary

If you've read the previous post and watched the video, you will know what Wordnik is about. As Erin McKean said in her talk, she wants to see all the words in dictionaries. And "Traditional dictionaries make you wait until they've found what they consider to be "enough" information about a word before they will show it to you." So, "Wordnik wants to be a place for all the words, and everything known about them." (http://www.wordnik.com/pages/about). Wordnik is worth a visit and it will be fascinating to see how it evolves.

This is how it works. Say you look up the word "gluttonous". You'll get definitions from traditional dictionaries (American Heritage, Webster's), lots of examples from different publications, real time Twitter posts with the word, a list of related words, pronunciation and statistics of how much the word is used. For other words, you may get images too. "Our goal is to show you as much information as possible, just as fast as we can find it, for every word in English, and to give you a place where you can make your own opinions about words known."

Wordnik is also a collaborative site - people can contribute words, pronunciations, definitions, related words, even new words they have created:

Wouldn't it be great if we had the same initiative for other languages, like Portuguese?
In any case, I think this will be excellent for those difficult words translators often have to deal with and that aren't in any dictionary.

New search engines

An article in O Globo yesterday (http://oglobo.globo.com/tecnologia/) discussed new search engines (other than Google). Here's a summary of the article so you can test the new tools:

- Bing http://www.bing.com/ - The new Microsoft search engine. Strength: no need to browse the links one by one, returning to the results everytime. Next to each result you can preview the page before visiting it. Same works for images and videos, which start playing as you move the cursor over the results. You need to choose United States (top right) to be able to use the complete version.
- Wolfram Alpha http://www.wolframalpha.com/ - Uses a 'superplataform' called Mathematica. It's an answer engine. The less you write, the more information you get. If you type in the name of a city, for example, it will return lots of information about the city.
- Powerset http://www.powerset.com/ - Also an answer engine, it answers complete questions, such as 'Where is Klagenfurt?'
- Viewzi http://www.viewzi.com/ - A different way to preview results with Flash.
- Leapfish http://www.leapfish.com/ - Results from Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft, simple interface.
- Vadlor http://www.vadlo.com/ - Specializes in biomedical and life sciences
- Blackle http://www.blackle.com/ - Specializes in ecology - and is ecological: the background is black to save your monitor's energy.

I have yet to test them, and will follow up with my experiences. You can also let us know what you think about them by posting a comment.

Visual Dictionary

Maybe you all know this dictionary already, but I must confess I only found it recently when I was desperate to find a specific term. It's the Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary Online http://visual.merriam-webster.com/index.php (a vast improvement on the Lexicon I used to have when I was a student...). And it really is a great help when translating into English. Sometimes you can't find the right term for that little part... So try to find a picture of whatever it is that you want (a machine, an animal, a place) and you'll get the names for all the parts. For example, I looked up 'electronic scale' and this is the picture I got:

I'm starting a new series, Blog of the month, to write about one of the translation blogs I recommend here (list on the right).

Here's the the first one: Translation Tips http://www.rede-de-tradutores.blogspot.com/. Written by Rose Polato, who says she's 'fascinated by the intricacies of languages'. Each post discusses the translation of one group of words or is a mini-glossary about one topic. And the one before that

I've just bought the Dictionary of Law, Economics and Accounting (English-Portuguese / Portuguese-English) written and published by Marcílio Moreira de Castro. It's sold only via his website: http://sites.google.com/site/marciliotradutor/Home/dicion%C3%A1rio-1 . First you deposit or transfer the money, then he mails it to you (85 reais for Brazil and 60 dollars for anywhere else - book + post). This is the second, revised edition. It's really very complete and much more than just a dictionary. His explanations are thorough and he includes comparative translations at the back.
